Fear no hemp

The words 'hemp' and 'macrame' seem to have somewhat of a negative connotation nowadays. You ask someone, "What do you think of when you hear the word 'macrame'?" and they'll start rambling about gaudy wall hangings and stiff, ugly hippie vests. I'll say it time and time again, that's not all there is to it!

Simply put, macrame is the art of tying knots. People are most familiar with the simple hemp square-knot bracelets, but it's a boring pattern if you ask me. There's so much more you can do with macrame, and the best thing about it is that you can completely teach yourself as long as you're willing to devote the time and patience. Once I learned the basics, I've had so much fun trying loads of random knot patterns to come up with something new and unique. And that fun never ends! Pictured here is just a very small example of some of the jewelry pieces you can create simply by tying a bunch of knots. Only a few things are available in my Etsy shop right now, but there's always more to come, and I warmly welcome custom orders.

My love of knotting contributes to the fact that my inventory stash is full of unworn hemp bracelets and necklaces that usually go unnoticed on my table at craft shows. I just cannot get past my personal knotting obsession to understand why most people shy away from macrame and hemp products altogether. Can you help me figure it out? Please take my poll on hemp jewelry above (open until 1/31) and/or comment below. I'd love to hear from you!

35 Skeins + New Hooks = a Happy Crocheter

A grand after-holiday treat for myself..

I’ve taken my December sales from Etsy and gone a bit overboard with my latest supplies purchase! The result: 35 balls of yarn in various colors, materials, and thicknesses. This is by far the most yarn I've ever bought at one time.

I feel pretty nerdy for being so excited about it, but the ideas are flooding my head faster than I can materialize them. There are quite a few different brands in this mix, all of which I’ve been curious about but haven’t yet tried. I’ve stocked up on different wool and acrylic blends, and I now have plenty of skinnier yarn, perfect for making mittens and gloves, in both solids and multicolors.

Check my Etsy shop periodically throughout the winter for lots of new hats, gloves, mittens, and more.. for women AND men! (Dudes get cold too, right? Buy your man a beanie for snowboarding !)
